On Wednesday, Jan. 21, Red Bull New York announced its coaching staff for the 2026 Major League Soccer season, including the hiring of Dominik Wohlert as RBNY II head coach. As previously reported by Michael Battista of New York Sports Nation and Hudson River Blue, Mike Sorber joins RBNY as an assistant.
Assistant coach and fan favorite Ibrahim Sekagya will remain with the first team staff, alongside goalkeeper coach Jeremy Proud.
Proud, 46, joined the first team staff in 2023 after spending multiple seasons as both the RBNY II and RBNY Academy goalkeeping coach.
Sekagya, 45, joined the first team staff as an assistant midway through 2025 when Michael Bradley took over the RBNY II head coaching position. A Supporters' Shield winner with RBNY in 2013, Sekagya has been a coach within the club since 2015 when he joined the RBNY II staff as an assistant. He took over as the head coach in 2022.
Wohlert becomes the fifth head coach in RBNY II history. He has spent the last four seasons with the club, working as an assistant coach underneath former first team managers Gerhard Struber, Troy Lesesne and Sandro Schwarz.
Prior to joining the club, Heidelberg, Germany native served as a scouting intern and Head of Match Analysis for Hertha BSC of the Bundesliga between 2013 and 2021 before being appointed as an assistant until the end of 2021.
In a statement, RBNY revealed that Wohlert's coaching staff will consist of "Assistant Coach Jonathan Rhodes, Goalkeeper Coach Miguel Gutierrez, Athletic Trainer Jamie Goodwin, Performance Analyst Joshua Rubin, Equipment Manager Fernando Da Costa, Strength and Conditioning Coach Adrian Sanchez and Team Administrator Savita Wilson."
2026 MLS GAM amounts by team were released on Wednesday morning by Tom Bogert of The Athletic.
As of Jan. 20, New York has $5,284,106 in GAM, a vast improvement over the $159,900 in GAM New York ended the 2025 season with. Their total ranks 13th out of 30 across the league, putting them in a solid position to continue to do business. Following many offseason departures, the club has a significant amount of money to improve their squad, but may be required to ship more players out in order to make room on the roster.
MLS Next Pro schedules for the 2026 season have officially been released. RBNY II will play Columbus Crew 2 in its opening match of the year on Sunday, Mar. 15 at MSU Soccer Park as the club looks to defend its 2025 MLS Next Pro Cup title.
