Red Bull New York officially announced the signing of American defender Justin Che on Tuesday, Dec. 16. New York has its new right back.
The 22-year-old comes to Sports Illustrated Stadium by way of Brondby IF, one of the top sides in Denmark. Che, a former academy product from FC Dallas and standount with the U.S. U20s, found playing time hard to come by across the pond, embarking on loan spells to the second divisions of both the Netherlands and more recently Belgium. He only ever played once for his parent club.
The announcement comes after much speculation that Che would be a target for New York to bolster its defense all the way back to the 2025 MLS summer transfer window. At season's end, the deal resurfaced and both parties were able to come to an agreement. With his new MLS contract, Che will be with the Red Bulls through 2028 with an additional option for 2029.
Che will compete with Dylan Nealis and potentially Cameron Harper for a starting job at the right back position. Che will effectively replace Kyle Duncan, who departed after the end of the 2025 MLS season upon the expiration of his contract.
AMNY Sports's Joe Pantorno confirmed today that Red Bull New York has finalized its signing of USMNT winger Cade Cowell from Liga MX outfit Chivas. The deal is a one-year loan with an option to buy.
The report comes after weeks of rumors and speculation that Cowell was going to be headed to a New York MLS team, originally reported by Rebano Pasion.
In early December, the interested New York MLS team was identified as the Red Bulls, who will need the reinforcements up front due to players departing the club.
As part of the transaction, New York will send the San Jose Earthquakes $50,000 in 2026 GAM for acquiring the player's discovery rights.
This money will be recouped for the season as the Red Bulls announced a trade with FC Dallas, exchanging the 12th selection in the 2025 MLS Superdraft for the 21st. New York will receive $100,000 in GAM split evenly across 2026 and 2027 after trading back in the draft.
Also on Tuesday, Red Bull New York confirmed the previously reported outgoing trades of homegrown midfielder Peter Stroud and star forward Lewis Morgan.
Morgan's deal sees New York receive a 3rd round pick in the MLS Superdraft and $450,000 in GAM with a potential $650,000 in performance-based add-ons. San Diego will receive a return payment of $525,000 in GAM in 2027, signaling just how dire RBNY's current need for GAM is.
Stroud departs after three seasons with his hometown MLS club. The former Duke Blue Devil will join a talented midfield group in Minnesota United.
