Minnesota United has acquired Peter Stroud from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for $475,000 in General Allocation Money (Tom Bogert first).
The deal comes after New York exercised the 23 year old midfielder's option for 2026 follow his contract's expiration at the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season. Stroud's contract also carries an additional option for 2027.
With the trade, the Loons pick up a reliable squad player in central midfield and the Red Bulls free up a supplemental roster spot. As of the 2025 MLS roster freeze on Sept. 26, New York has just $159,900 in GAM, collecting some much needed cash ahead of what looks to be an eventful offseason.
Stroud, who signed a homegrown contract with the Red Bulls in January of 2023, will leave New York having played 83 matches for the club, including MLS Cup in 2024. He was with the club's academy program from 2015-2018 before returning to play for the senior team after three seasons successful seasons with the Duke Blue Devils.
The Chester, New Jersey native is not the only member of the Stroud family to turn pro with the Red Bulls, as his older brother Jared, now with DC United, was with the club between 2018 and 2020.
Newly promoted Head of Sport Julian de Guzman has hinted at the idea of a roster overhaul after the Red Bulls failed to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2009. Stroud's departure represents the first of seemingly many upcoming and outgoing transfers to make room for necessary squad reinforcements.
Those reinforcements may already be well on their way, with sources reporting that U.S. international winger Cade Cowell is on the Red Bulls' radar. The former San Jose Earthquakes forward has struggled to recapture his early form at Liga MX outfit Chivas and would fit nicely as a wide option for New York's attack, at least on paper.
De Guzman, who oversaw the roster construction of 2025 MLS Next Pro champions New York Red Bulls II as Sporting Director, has indicated a desire to alter New York's playing style into one more rooted in possession and free-flowing attacking soccer. With that, he will also be tasked with bringing in a new head coach, with NYRB II manager Michael Bradley in pole position to receive the promotion to the first team.
Further reporting suggests Red Bull mainstays Daniel Edelman and Sean Nealis may be the next players on their way out.
Edelman, a homegrown central midfielder whose rise was once likened to that of Tyler Adams, is under contract through the 2027 MLS season with an additional year's option.
Nealis, a center back whose option for 2026 was just picked up by the club, could depart and make way for the resigning of fellow veteran defender Tim Parker, who was favored by former manager Sandro Schwarz through the end of the 2025 season. Reports from the club reveal that the club is in talks to keep Parker in New York.
