On Monday, Red Bull New York announced that it had re-signed goalkeeper AJ Marcucci to a four year contract extension through 2029 with an additional option for 2030.
Marcucci, 26, was drafted by the Red Bulls out of Connecticut College in 2021, becoming the first MLS draft pick from a Division 3 school since 2016.
After spending three full seasons with the reserve side and a successful lone spell in Finland with IF Gnistan, Marcucci broke into the New York first team in 2025. Playing in a number of competitions, Marcucci appeared in two MLS matches, two Leagues Cup matches and three US Open Cup matches.
It was a standout tournament run from Marcucci in the Open Cup, winning in penalties over FC Dallas in the Round of 16 before tearing his ACL in the dying moments of a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia Union in the quarterfinals on Aug. 13
Marcucci missed the remainder of the 2025 season following the injury and is expected to miss significant time through 2026. On Thursday, RBNY drafted New Jersey native Tomas Hut out of Syracuse University to add another body within the goalkeeping ranks.
This long-term commitment to Marcucci suggests a real belief that the West Chester, PA native can recover from his injury and become the full-time starter. For now, Marcucci is joined by homegrown Aidan Stokes and MLS veteran John McCarthy among first-team contracted goalkeepers.
Prior to his injury, Marcucci seemed to be in pole position to pick up the starting goalkeeping mantle from Carlos Coronel, who signed with Orlando City this offseason. New York brought in McCarthy from LA Galaxy to carry the backup keeping load for the remainder of 2025 and potentially the starting role into 2026.
As of now, it looks like it's going to be McCarthy's goal for at least the start of next season.
